Table Manners

1.     When is it acceptable to put your elbows on the table?

  Only between courses.
  While you are eating.
  Never.

2.  During the meal you need to visit the restroom. What do you do?

  Announce to everyone, "I've gotta go to the toilet."
  Say, "Excuse me for a moment, I'll be right back."
  Say nothing -- just leave.
  Sit quietly and suffer until the meal is over.

3.  When you are not eating, where do you keep your hands?

  On your lap or resting on the table.
  In your pockets.
  Keep 'em busy. Drum a little tune with your fingers.

4.  Is it good manners to read the newspaper at the table?

  Only if you're willing to share the sports section.
  Yes -- as long as you keep it neatly folded.
  No. Reading or watching TV during dinner is a social no-no.

5.  At dinner, when should you start eating?

  As soon as you are served.
  When everyone has been served.
  When the host or parent begins to eat.

Potato Fritters

Potato(s) : 2 large
Flour : 3 tbsp
Egg : 1
Onion : 1 medium
Corn : 2 tbsp
Milk : 1 cup
Salt and Pepper : to taste
Oil : to fry

Grate the potatoes coarsely and drain out excess water. Add flour, egg, corn, onions, salt and pepper. Add the milk to get a batter like consistency.
Drop spoonful of the mixture into frying pan. Cook on both sides till golden brown.

To add an Indian touch to it, add 1 tsp of coriander and cumin powder.
Zucchini is a good alternative to potato.

T.Vയും Channel ലുകളുമുള്ളതിനാല്‍ ത്രുശൂരില്‍ താമസിക്കാത്ത ത്രൂശൂരുകാരും ആഘോഷങ്ങളില്‍ മനസ്സു കൊണ്ടു മുഴുകിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ത്രൂശുരുകാരിയായ ഞാന്‍, അമ്മ, ചേച്ചിയെല്ലാം chat ചെയ്യാനായിട്ട് വിളിച്ചപ്പോള്‍, അവരൊക്കെ വൈകുന്നേരത്തെ കുടമാറ്റം കാണുന്ന തിരക്കിലായിരുന്നു.

സാധരണയായി school അവധിക്കാലത്താണ്‍ ഞാന്‍ ത്രുശൂരിലുള്ള അമ്മ വീട്ടിലെത്തുക.എന്റെ grandfather(ഞങ്ങള്‍ “അപ്പന്‍” യെന്നാണ്‍ വിളിക്കാറുള്ളത്) യാണ്‍ പൂരം കാണിക്കാനായിട്ട് എല്ലാം പിള്ളേരു set കളെയും കൊണ്ടുപോവുക. പൂരം കാണാനായിട്ട് എത്ര കുട്ടികളുണ്ടോ, അത്രയും സന്തോഷമായിരുന്നു, അപ്പന്‍.രാവിലെ 7 മണിക്ക് തന്നെ ഞങ്ങളെല്ലാം തയ്യാറായിട്ട് പോകും.രാവിലത്തെ പൂരം, ആനകളുടെ ചമയങ്ങള്‍ കാണല്‍, മസാല ദോശ ഹോട്ടലില്‍ നിന്ന്...........കുട്ടികളുടെ gang യായ ഞങ്ങളുക്കും ആകെ പൂരം തന്നെ. വഴി നീളെ പരിചയക്കാരും കാണും അപ്പന്‍. വൈകുന്നേരത്തെ പൂരമായ കുടമാറ്റമാണ്‍, കുട്ടികളായ ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കൂടുതല്‍ കൌതുകമുണ്ടാക്കിയിരുന്നത്.ഒരു പ്രാവശ്യം ഞങ്ങള്‍ കുട്ടികളുടെ എണ്ണം കുറവായിരുന്നു.അപ്പോള്‍ അപ്പനേയും എന്നേയും കൂട്ടി ആനകളുടെ അടുത്ത് എത്രയും പോകാമോ അത്രയും അടുത്ത് നിന്ന് കുടമാറ്റം കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.ഇതുപോലെ എല്ലാം കാണിച്ചു തരാന്‍ അപ്പന്‍ വളരെ ഉത്സാഹമായിരുന്നു.പുലറ്ച്ചെയുള്ള വെടിക്കെട്ടിന്‍ ഞാനും വരാമെന്നു പറയുമെങ്കിലും ഉറക്കംകാരണം പോകാതെ കിടന്നു ഉറങ്ങുമായിരുന്നു. പിറ്റെദിവസത്തിന്റെ രാവിലത്തെ പൂരം കഴിയുന്നതോടെ പലഹാരങ്ങള്‍,ബലൂണ്‍,പീപ്പിയോക്കെ മേടിക്കുന്ന സമയമാണ്‍.ബലൂണ്‍,പീപ്പിയുടെ ബഹളമായിരിക്കും വീട്ടില്‍.അപ്പന്‍, ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഇല്ല. മരിച്ചിട്ട് ഏകദേശം17 വറ്ഷമാകുന്നു.എന്നാലും പൂരം വരുബോള്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ ആദ്യം ഓറ്ക്കുന്നത് അപ്പനെയാണ്‍.

ത്രുശൂര്‍ പൂരത്തിന്‍ കണ്ടിട്ടുള്ള ആനകളുടെ വലിപ്പമോ എടുപ്പോ മറ്റു സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലുള്ള് ആനകള്‍ക്ക് തോന്നാറില്ല. ഒരു പക്ഷെ കുഞ്ഞുമനസ്സിലെ എന്റെ  ചിത്രം വെച്ചു നോക്കുബോഴായിരിക്കും.

ഇപ്പോഴും ഏതെങ്കിലും ഒരു Kerala Restaurant ല്‍ പോയാല്‍ ഒരു ആനയുടെ പടമോ or പൂരത്തിന്റെ പടമോ കാണാറുണ്ട്.അതോടെ ഞാന്‍, എന്റെ പൂരത്തിന്റെ ഈ കഥകളൊക്കെ ഭറ്ത്താവിനും കുട്ടികളോടും പറയാറുണ്ട്.ഭക്ഷണം order ചെയ്യത് വരാന്‍ സമയം എടുക്കുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് എല്ലാവരും ക്ഷമയോടെ ഈ കഥകള്‍ കേട്ടിരിക്കാറുണ്ട്.

പൂരത്തിന്റെ വാദ്യമേളങ്ങളും,കൊബനാനകളും വെടിക്കെട്ടുമെല്ലാം ഏതൊരു ത്രുശൂരുകാരുടെയും മനസ്സിലെ മായാത്ത ചിത്രങ്ങളാണ്‍.ഇതുപോലെ ത്രുശൂകാരായ എല്ലാവറ്ക്കും പൂരത്തിനെപ്പറ്റി നിറച്ചും കഥകള്‍ പറയാനായിട്ട് കാണുമെന്നറിയാം. പറ്റുമെങ്കില്‍ ആ കഥകള്‍ ഞങ്ങളോടപ്പം share ചെയ്യാം.

Orange Pudding

Ingredients:

Butter - 1 tbsp

Sugar - Half cup

All purpose Flour - 2 Tbsp

Orange Rind - 1 tsp

Orange Juice - 1 cup

Egg yolk - 2

Egg white - 2

Beat egg whites till stiff. Fold in all the other ingredients and mix well. 

Set oven at 190 C. Pour the mixture into vessel and place in another hot water vessel. Bake for 45 mins to 1 hour. 

There will be a crust formation. 

Serves 4. 

This can be topped with whipped cream.

Heavy Cream - 1 cup

Sugar - 1/4 cup

Vanilla extract - 1tsp.

Whip cream until almost stiff. Add sugar and vanilla and whip till it peaks. 

Spread it over the pudding after it cools.
